College Football – Michigan State Crushes Montana State, Both Sophomore Quarterbacks Look Good
College Football – Michigan State Crushes Montana State, Both Sophomore Quarterbacks Look Good

Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio’s job became harder Saturday after his Spartans polished off 1-AA Montana State, 44-3, but it also became sweeter.
It became harder because 1-AA Montana State is a far cry from the opponents the Spartans will face as they work their way through Big Ten competition in the weeks ahead. Playing a 1-AA team was a big deal for the Spartans because it was the first time in school history they had faced such an unevenly matched team.
Dantonio’s job became sweeter because his two sophomore quarterbacks—Kirk Cousins and Keith Nichol—both looked good in their bid to become the starting QB to replace Brian Hoyer, now a backup QB for the NFL’s New England Patriots. When watching Hoyer play last year, he was inconsistent, but he was also apparently good enough to try competing at the next level.
Michigan State had a huge question mark in who would replace Hoyer. Both Cousins, who goes 6-3 and 202, and Nichol, who goes 6-2 and 215, split time under center and looked good.
Cousins went 10-for-17 for 183 yards, and had 3 touchdown passes—a 29-yarder to sophomore B. J. Cunningham, a 15-yarder to senior Blair White, and another 24-yarder to White.
Nichol went 9-for-18 for 135 yards, and had 2 touchdown passes—a 26-yarder to freshman tight end Dion Sims, and a 3-yarder to sophomore tight end Brian Linthicum. Sims goes 6-5 and 268; Linthicum goes 6-5 and 245.
Michigan State’s passing game looks both young and effective at the moment. The question now is: can they do it against much better competition in the heat of Big Ten play?
Another big question mark is who would replace Spartan All-American running back Javon Ringer. Ringer, who was drafted by the NFL’s Tennessee Titans, ran 390 times as a senior, gaining 1,637 yards and scoring 22 rushing touchdowns. He led the nation in carries, touchdowns and scoring, and was 4th in rushing yards. Ringer accounted for 97% of Michigan State’s rushing yardage last year.
Against Montana State, redshirt freshman Caulton Ray had 12 carries for 71 yards (5.9 yards per carry), freshman Larry Caper added 34 yards on 7 carries (4.8 ypc), and freshman Edwin Baker added another 27 yards on 8 carries (3.3 ypc).
Senior Blair White had impressive numbers with 9 receptions for 162 yards and 2 TDs.
The Spartans led 28-0 at the half, and rolled up 493 offensive yards to 160 for Montana State. Michigan State’s star linebacker, junior Greg Jones, had 14 tackles; he is arguably he best linebacker in the Big Ten.
The game was Michigan State’s home opener. Montana State will receive at least 0,000 for traveling to East Lansing for an almost certain first-game loss, but the payday will be enough to pay nearly a third of Montana State’s annual football budget. The Spartans host Central Michigan at home Saturday.

2010 College Football Predictions: Michigan
2010 College Football Predictions: Michigan
Michigan got off to a 5-2 start in 2009 before losing its final five games. It is certainly worth noting that the Wolverines could have easily started the season 7-0. They fell at Michigan State in overtime and at Iowa by only two points after winning their first four games. Head coach Rich Rodriguez is beginning to put his stamp on this football team, but he may not get the chance to see this thing through. All Michigan cares about is winning. When they look at Rodriguez, all they see is his 8-16 record in two seasons. If Rodriguez can’t get Michigan to a bowl game in year three, it appears he will be given the boot. Rodriguez came to Michigan renowned for his offensive mind, and the Wolverines should once again be one of the best offensive teams in the Big Ten. Most of the question marks are on the defensive side of the football. A unit that allowed opponents to score 30 or more points seven times last season could be what ends up costing Rodriguez his job.
Offense – Scoring 29.5 points per game, the Wolverines ranked No. 3 in the Big Ten in scoring offense in 2009. They really had it going early in the season, scoring 28 or more points in six of their first seven games, but they only managed to exceed that mark once in their final five games. Quarterbacks Tate Forcier and Denard Robinson were forced to grow up in a hurry last year. They gained vital game experience that will prove beneficial this season. Plus, I expect them both to take their games to a new level while being pushed from true freshman Devin Gardner. When it’s all said and done, I expect Forcier to emerge as the starter once again. The kid showed a lot of toughness last season, and he has already built chemistry with Michigan’s talented receiving corps. Rodriguez will still find ways to get Robinson the football. He averaged over five yards per carry on just 69 rushing attempts in 2009. Michigan’s talented receiving unit includes Roy Roundtree, Martavious Odoms, Junior Hemingway, and Darry Stonum. Expect the offense to be more consistent and more explosive in 2010.
Defense: Despite boasting talented performers like Brandon Graham, Stevie Brown and Donovan Warren, the Wolverines still ranked eighth in the league in scoring defense and ninth in total defense. These three will be missed, but Michigan is hoping that a change to a 3-3-5 scheme will enable the defense to improve. The key will be stopping the run. The Wolverines ranked No. 10 in the Big Ten in rushing defense last year, allowing 171.9 yards per game. You just can’t beat teams like Iowa, Penn State, Wisconsin and Ohio State if you can’t stop the run. The Wolverines do return almost everyone up front so there is reason to believe they can do a better job of run-stuffing this season. Highly regarded defensive tackle Mike Martin will especially need to be a beast for Michigan to take the next step.
Prediction – 5th Big Ten – It won’t be easy, but I like Michigan to find its way into a bowl game in 2010. The Wolverines have the potential to get off to another fast start. They’ll likely be at least 4-1 when in-state rival Michigan State comes to town. But the success of this season will be determined by how well the Wolverines finish. They finished poorly in 2009, but there is reason to believe they can do better in the home stretch this time around. Be sure to check out how I have the rest of the league shaping up in my 2010 Big Ten Football predictions.

2010 College Football Predictions – Georgia
2010 College Football Predictions – Georgia
2009 marked a low point during the Mark Richt era. The Bulldogs’ 8-5 record was the worst in Richt’s nine seasons. Georgia finished in the bottom half of the SEC in both scoring offense and defense. The defense was bad by just about any standards, causing Richt to part ways with three of his four defensive assistants. But there is reason to believe that 2010 will treat the Dawgs better. Richt is 90-27 during his stay in Athens, and wins don’t pile up like that unless you’re doing something right. With Tim Tebow and eight other Gators making the jump to the NFL Georgia is optimistic that it can get back to the top of the SEC East this season, but I can assure you it won’t be easy. After all, Florida crushed the Dawgs 41-17 last season and the cupboard is not empty in Gainesville. The Dawgs rebounded from that loss to win four of their final five games, including a victory over Texas A&M in the Independence Bowl. That gives them some nice momentum heading into the season. Additionally, one has to think Georgia will do a better job of taking care of the football. The Bulldogs ranked last in the SEC and 118th out of 120 nationally in turnover margin a year ago.
Offense – Georgia has an offense loaded with talent and experience, but a lack of experience at the quarterback position could be what keeps the Dawgs from an SEC East title. Logan Gray is the only quarterback on Georgia’s roster that has taken a snap in college, and he hasn’t taken very many of them. Redshirt freshman Aaron Murray looks to be the better player and that makes him the favorite to land the starting job this fall. Growing pains are expected, but he should benefit from playing behind one of the best offensive lines in the league and from throwing to one of the best wide receivers in the country. The offensive line returns four experienced starters, including stud blindside protector Clint Boling. A.J. Green is a game-breaker, capable of getting behind the defense on any given play. He caught 53 passes for 808 yards and six scores in 2009. In order to take the pressure off of Murray, the Dawgs will go with a heavy dose of running backs Washaun Ealey and Caleb King. Ealey is coming off a 717-yard, three-touchdown season.
Defense – The Dawgs ranked No. 10 in the SEC in scoring defense, allowing 25.9 points per game. That was enough to send three defensive assistants packing. Todd Grantham of the Dallas Cowboys was hired to take over defensive coordinator duties. Georgia also brought Connecticut’s Scott Lakatos and Vanderbilt’s Warren Belin aboard to coach the secondary and the insider linebackers respectively. Grantham is transitioning the defense into a 3-4 scheme. He wants this unit to be the attacker, so you can count on the new scheme coming with plenty of blitz packages. Being more aggressive on defense should help the Dawgs improve some, but it will also make them susceptible to the big play. The player to watch is outside linebacker Justin Houston. He recorded 7.5 sacks last season.
Prediction – 2nd SEC East – Georgia will be a better football team in 2010, and we will get a much better feel for how much better when it plays South Carolina and Arkansas in September. Right now, Florida still looks to be a little bit ahead of the Dawgs on both sides of the football. That could change by the time these two teams meet in Jacksonville on Halloween eve, but I’m not ready to make that leap yet. Be sure to check out my 2010 SEC football predictions to see how I have the rest of the league playing out.

Excelsior College® BS-MBA Program Meets Rising Demand for Health Care Management Professionals
Albany, NY (Vocus) October 13, 2010
With demand for health care management professionals growing at a faster pace than for all other occupations, Sgt. Loudivie Enguillado may be on the right path toward her future career. A dental hygienist stationed at Fort Hood, Texas, Loudivie has enrolled in the Excelsior College® BS-MBA program, a dual-degree track with a health care management focus that will bring more qualified working adults into a rapidly expanding field.
The mother of five is finally back in the U.S. after a deployment, and she now envisions a well-paying career in health care management. But she needs more education in order to move up.
“This program is the best way for me to achieve a master’s degree, and I hope to someday work in a management position in a hospital or other health care facility,” she said. “The coursework is demanding, but it means a lot to me that I can do my homework right along with my kids. I want them to see that their mom is a student, too, and to know that perseverance and dedication are the key to success.”
“The Bachelor of Science in Health Care Management and MBA degree program is Excelsior’s response to workforce demands and student interest in the health care industry,” said Dr. Deborah Sopczyk, dean of the School of Health Sciences at Excelsior. In addition, she said, as more Americans gain access to medical care under the new federal health care law, more management-level professionals will be needed to administer an expanded patient population.
“There is great opportunity in this field, and the best-qualified health care managers will be working adults already in the field who gain master’s-level education,” said Dr. Jane LeClair, dean of the School of Business and Technology. “Some of these adults must first earn a relevant bachelor’s degree, and our program streamlines this educational process for working professionals.”
Data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics suggest Sgt. Enguillado may have a bright future: employment in the medical/health care management field is projected expected to grow 16 percent from 2008-2018, faster than the average for all occupations. Job opportunities will be best for applicants who bring work experience and strong business management skills, and the BLS reports that the median annual wage for management-level health care professionals is ,850.
“The health care industry will continue to expand and diversify, requiring managers to ensure smooth business operations,” according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics
Occupational Outlook Handbook.
Among the health care industry’s key challenges are achieving health care efficiencies, cost-control, accountability to insurance companies and Medicare, computerization of patient records, recruitment and retention of employees, regulatory issues and preventive care. Employment opportunities will grow quickly in health practitioner offices and in health care management companies.
Loudivie, 38, first enrolled at Excelsior to complete a BS in health science, but changed her track upon learning of the new combined degree program, which was introduced in September 2010. The combined degree will allow her to complete three graduate-level “bridge” courses as an undergraduate. Her nine earned credits will transfer into the Excelsior MBA program, and then she will be just 27 credits away from her master’s degree.
Loudivie is already well on her way toward a BS degree, since much of her military training and prior college courses were accepted for academic transfer credit by Excelsior.
Meanwhile, Excelsior’s flexible online coursework requirements enable her to care for her children, work full-time, and complete her class assignments.
