Businesses That Plan Ahead May Have a Better Chance of Accessing Billions in New Small Business Loans, Study Says

The small business legislation that President Obama signed into law this week was good news for small businesses looking to access a newly established billion loan fund. It’s even better news for small businesses who took the time to complete a business plan, according to the results of a recently reissued June 2010 study conducted by researchers affiliated with the University of Oregon Department of Economics.
The paper found that companies completing business plans were twice as likely to successfully grow their business, get investment capital or land a loan. Researchers examined data on nearly 3,000 users of business plan software.
“The bottom line is that completing a plan correlated with increased success in every one of the business objectives that came up in the study,” said Tim Berry, founder of Palo Alto Software and author of the business planning software Business Plan Pro.
The news comes at a time when the Small Business Administration estimates more than a half-million businesses fail annually. Despite the tough climate businesses are facing, there are loans available for small business owners — many of them at record-low interest rates. But with less capital available, more companies are fighting for a smaller piece of the pie, and smart businesses are finding that it pays to be prepared with a plan. With talk of a double-dip recession and other uncertainty clouding the air, business planning has become less a one-time event and more an ongoing process, business experts say.
“It is important to remember that business plans are living documents,” Berry said. “Those who take the time to complete a plan, follow it and update it often are most likely to be successful.”
Patricia Schaefer of BusinessKnowHow.com cites lack of planning as one of her top seven reasons why small businesses fail. And in a challenging business environment, completing a plan properly is just as important as having a plan in the first place.
“(A plan) must be realistic and based on accurate, current information and educated projections for the future,” she writes. “Many small businesses fail because of fundamental shortcomings in their business planning.”
The Oregon study looked specifically at planning completed using business plan software. Researchers Eason Ding and Tim Hursey — who prepared and presented the paper as part of the requirements for their honors degrees, under the supervision of professor Joe Stone — looked at a questionnaire answered by 2,877 respondents. Of those people, 995 had completed a plan and:
297 of them (36 percent) secured a loan
280 of them (36 percent) secured investment capital
499 of them (64 percent) had grown their business.
The study found that, among firms of varying ages, the amount of business planning was related to success. Ding and Hursey also found that Web-based firms had “a significant correlation of success with business planning.” The study did not examine differing rates of success between individual firms. Across the board businesses completing plans scored higher, suggesting that, with the right planning, craft beer brewers or tattoo parlor owners could achieve success as readily as lawyers or medical professionals.
Results suggest that business planning “is highly correlated with subsequent successes for a variety of firms,” the paper states.

California Farmers & Businesses Applaud Governor?s Veto of Card Check Legislation

A coalition of business and agricultural organizations today praised Governor Schwarzenegger’s veto of Senate Bill 1474 (Steinberg), which they said would have imposed a backdoor method for unionizing workers through an undemocratic card check program.
“Despite the bill’s creative language, the Governor understood that at its core, the proposal represented the same type of assault on democracy, business and workers as in previous legislative proposals,” said Barry Bedwell, president of the California Grape & Tree Fruit League, a coalition member.
“Every California farmer and farm employee should be grateful to Governor Schwarzenegger for standing up for the right to a secret ballot,” said Tom Nassif, President and CEO of Western Growers.
In his veto message, the Governor echoed the concerns of farmers and the business community, saying that the “provisions of SB 1474 represent a serious departure from existing law . . . Overturning and reversing secret ballot election results should not be taken lightly and may be appropriate in only the most egregious cases. For these reasons, I am unable to sign this bill.”
The California Farm Bureau Federation said the Governor’s veto also sends a strong signal about getting the state’s economy back on track.
“The Governor understood that signing a bill like SB 1474 into law would have sent the wrong message to all businesses – not just those of us in agriculture,” said Rich Matteis, the Administrator for the Farm Bureau. “His action protects our fragile economy and makes a strong statement about his concern for business and jobs.”

IPCPR Believes Maryland Smoking Ban Puts Jobs, Businesses, Non-Profits at Risk

Maryland jobs and businesses are at stake and many non-profit organizations may be hurt as a result of the state’s ban on smoking in public places, according to Chris McCalla, director of legislative affairs for the International Premium Cigar & Pipe Retailers Association (IPCPR).
“Maryland smokers aren’t the only ones anxiously anticipating the February 1 launch of the state’s ban on smoking indoors in areas open to the public and in indoor places of employment,” said McCalla. “One of the unintended consequences of this ill-conceived legislation is that many jobs and businesses may be at stake and many of Maryland’s finest non-profit organizations likely will also feel the pinch of lower contributions from the state’s tobacconists.”
McCalla explained that any decline in sales of premium cigars may result in closing of tobacconists’ businesses as well as a loss of jobs. In addition, many Maryland retail members of IPCPR have staged fund-raising events over the years that have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars to benefit a wide range of charities and non-profit organizations. The future of these events is now questionable.
Kenneth Kandell, owner of Westminster Cigar Co. in Westminster and Reistertown, Maryland, has promoted the “Bad Boy Smoker” annually for ten years. The sellout event benefits the Delrey School, a special school for children with cerebral palsy, and the Big Brother and Big Sister League. His event also has benefitted the Carroll County State’s Attorney’s office which used the money to aid victims of spousal abuse.
“Last year’s event will probably be the final one because of the Maryland smoking ban,” said Kandell.
“With smoking banned in public places, more such fund-raising events could well be eliminated,” McCalla said.
For the past seven years, The Humidour Cigar Shoppe, formerly in Timonium and now in Cockeysville, Maryland has held an annual “Smoke on the Water” charity event. The gala has benefitted Survivor Diver, to enhance the quality of life for breast cancer survivors; the Ed Block Courage Awards that helps prevent child abuse and raise awareness of abused children; the Adalius Thomas SLASH Fund to enrich the lives of underprivileged children; the Tony Siragusa Foundation helping underprivileged children; and the Daniel Wilcox Empowerment MINDS Foundation to open the horizons of disadvantaged youth in the inner city.
“We’ll continue to sell cigar boxes to benefit the Susan B. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and to donate cigars and accessories to many golf tournaments and charitable auctions,” Helmuth said, “but ‘Smoke on the Water’ has been the big charity event of the season for us.”
Maryland’s largest tobacconist is Davidus Cigars, Ltd., based in Monrovia with seven locations throughout the state, all owned by two brothers, David and Steve Castro.
“We contribute to a number of charity events every year,” said Steve Castro. “This past year, for example, we supported Special Olympics, the National Neimann-Pick Disease Foundation, Ronald McDonald House Charities, Veterans of Foreign Wars, St. Francis Episcopal Day School, GROWS – the Grass Roots Organization for the Well Being of Seniors, the American Red Cross and others.”
McCalla explained that, for the most part, tobacconists run family-owned businesses which have been part of their respective communities for decades. Their primary business is selling premium cigars, pipes and related accessories, not cigarettes or machine-made cigars.
“Premium cigars are special and tobacconists are special, too,” said McCalla. “The cigars are hand-crafted by artisans and favored by adult consumers who enjoy them because they make ordinary moments special and special moments extraordinary. And tobacconists work hard to be as knowledgeable as possible about their products and for their businesses to provide local jobs and community support. Also, because premium cigars are more a hobby than a habit, sales of these cigars are very sensitive to increased taxes such as were ultimately rejected by the federal government last year.
“Unfortunately, the the statewide public smoking prohibition includes premium cigars which means that scores of non-profit events held in public places may well be excluded from tobacconists’ event calendars,” said McCalla.
