Global Survey Shows Smartphones Have Tipped into Majority for Business Professional Use
Global Survey Shows Smartphones Have Tipped into Majority for Business Professional Use
Scottsdale, AZ (PRWEB) October 20, 2010
Toolbox.com, the operator of online communities for professional knowledge sharing, and PJA Advertising + Marketing, three-time BtoB Agency of the Year winner, today announced additional insights from Wave VI in the Social Media Index survey series.
A top finding: although smartphone usage is not predicted to overtake standard mobile phones until 2012*, 55% of IT, HR and finance professionals surveyed already use a smartphone, nearly three times the percentage than the overall population.
The August survey of nearly 3,000 global IT, HR and finance professionals found also that survey respondents are much more interested in vendors providing smartphone applications and features that help them do their jobs better rather than traditional mobile advertising. This finding mirrors an earlier Toolbox.com/PJA survey about the appropriate role of vendors in online networks.
“This survey provides clear evidence that smartphones are helping to further blur the line between personal and professional,” said Mike O’Toole, president of PJA Advertising + Marketing. “Nearly a third of respondents said the greatest benefit of mobile devices is the ability to respond to work issues in real time, wherever they are. Since two-thirds receive their mobile devices from their employers, that’s not so surprising.”
“Professionals are moving towards an always-on status with their mobile devices, utilizing them not only for traditional phone features and e-mail, but now as a primary gateway to engage with communities and social networks,” said George Krautzel, co-founder and president of Toolbox.com. “We also found it interesting that professionals are looking for larger screens and faster performance in their devices, which speaks to a natural upgrade path from smartphones to tablet PCs with phone-like features.”
Highlights of the survey include the following points:
The top 3 benefits of mobile devices are the ability to respond to work issues in real time (30.6%), connectivity to e-mail (24.1%), and the ability to work at home (14.6%).
Less than 30% of respondents felt that advertisers understand their use of mobile devices for professional purposes “well” or “very well.”
Respondents use their mobile devices 2.35 hours a week to consume user-generated content, 1.81 hours for editorial content, and 1.68 hours for vendor content.
Top wish-list features for users’ next mobile device include larger screen (25.5%), faster performance (17.3%), and longer battery life (15.1%).
Nearly 3,000 members of the IT, HR, and finance communities at Toolbox.com participated in Wave VI, conducted in August 2010. View the complete survey results. Results will be discussed in depth during the October 28 broadcast of PJA Radio at 3PM ET.
