End Messy Auto Undercoating Rust Removal with Eastwood’s Under Gone; Undercoat Removal Made Easy

Rust removal on an auto restoration project is a tedious task. In auto or truck restoration, the added factor of repairing a rusty area that was undercoated from the factory increases the challenge of getting the rust out. There are mechanical methods of removing the factory undercoating including propane torch heat and arm-muscle scraping or wire wheel angle or straight grinders.
“Each mechanical method of restoring a rusty area that was undercoated from the factory either covers you in a stringy mess or you are faced to deal with a horrible smell from the torched area,” said Matt Murray, Eastwood’s social media motorhead.
Eastwood created Under Gone, a chemically assisted solution designed to make the task of removing factory sprayed undercoating, quicker and easier. Under Gone is a biodegradable undercoat remover that quickly loosens the bond of the undercoating to the base metal and allows it to be easily scraped loose. “With Eastwood’s Under Gone it is now possible to stop using the old “caveman-esque” ways of removing undercoating and just spray, watch the foaming action and then easily peel the undercoating off,” Matt suggested.
Begin by putting on Eastwood’s Nitrale disposable gloves. These gloves are safe to use, light-weight and keep hands clean without restricting movement. Nitrale also offers advantages over vinyl: i.e. they are more resistant to chemicals, can be used by people with latex allergy problems, and has a tighter fit, with tougher and better dexterity.
To make the job even easier, use Eastwood’s spray can handles which fit most aerosol cans. The ergonomic design makes using aerosols on large projects much less tiring and improves the spraying technique.
Now it is time to spray one or two layers of Under Gone on the area. With the first coating, it’s important to wait until the ‘foaming action’ is over and has begun to soak into the undercoating. Apply the second coat and again wait for it to soak in. The undercoating then becomes more flexible and once an edge is cut into the area, the rust and undercoating peel off with a scraper.
Then use PRE Painting Prep to remove any remaining residue for a “paint ready” surface.
End this part of the project with Eastwood’s Rubberized Undercoating. This undercoating stands up to the most extreme conditions and protects your vehicle from rust, road salt and corrosion. It also adheres easily to metal and fiberglass surfaces and can be top coated with most paints.
