SeverCorr Announces “Job Fair Initiative”

SeverCorr, has recently announced that it will be hosting a “Job Fair Initiative,” to begin accepting applications for hourly positions at the SeverCorr steel mill in Columbus, MS. The “Job Fair Initiative” will be held Tuesday, June 13 through Saturday June 17, and Monday, June 19 through Wednesday, June 21, 2006, each day from 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM, at the East Mississippi Community College Technology Center, 8713 South Frontage Road, Mayhew, Mississippi.

Mississippi Department of Employment Security, (MDES), staff will be on hand to assist applicants with the process. Representatives from SeverCorr, Mississippi Department of Employment Security, (MDES), and East Mississippi Community College, (EMCC), will later screen the applications to ensure each applicant meets SeverCorr’s criteria. SeverCorr will then make the final selection for the interviewing and subsequent hiring.

“We are thrilled to be at this stage,” said SeverCorr President and CEO, John Correnti. “The process we are using will give everyone interested in applying for a job with SeverCorr an equal chance, and that is our goal,” he added.

All applicants wishing to be considered for a position at SeverCorr will need to fill out an online “e-application.” There will be no paper applications. 2010 Mississippi State Football Predictions

2010 Mississippi State Football Predictions

The Mississippi State Bulldogs head into the 2010 season with 14 starters back to a team that finished 5-7 overall and 3-5 in SEC play. Head coach Dan Mullen enters into his second season as the head coach of the Bulldogs, and will try and get this team back to a bowl game for the first time since 2007. It won’t be easy for the Bulldogs playing in the SEC West, and will likely need to pull off a couple upsets to get to six wins this season. Here is a quick look at what the Bulldogs will send to the field in 2010, plus my prediction on where they finish up the season in the SEC.

Offense:

The Bulldogs return seven starters to an offense that performed better than expected in 2009, as the Bulldogs went from scoring just 15.3 points in 2008 to 25.6 points a game in 2009. The Bulldogs will have to replace quarterback Tyson Lee, and it looks like a two way battle between junior Chris Relf and red-shirt freshman Tyler Russell. Relf appears to have the early edge, but either way whoever wins the job figures to do better than Lee did in 2009, as the Bulldogs averaged just 144 yards a game passing.

The Bulldogs bring back their top two threats at the receiver position in sophomore wide out Chad Bumphis and junior  tight end Marcus Green. These two combined for seven of the teams 9 touchdown receptions in 2009, and the numbers will only get better if the quarterback play improves. Senior Leon Berry is also back at the wide out position, while sophomore Chris Smith looks to get in on the action this season.

The Bulldogs offense was all about the run last year, as they averaged 228 yards a game on the ground, but it will be hard to replace the production of running back Anthony Dixon, as he ran for a team best 1,391 yards and 12 scores in 2009. Junior Vick Ballard looks to have the early edge to take over, but should get plenty of help from junior Robert Elliot and red-shirt freshman Montrell Conner.

One reason you have to believe the Bulldogs will be able to run the ball well again in 2010, is the fact that they have four starters back on the offensive line, led by senior left tackle Derek Sherrod and junior left guard Quentin Saulsberry. Sophomore Tobias Smith will likely be the new starter on the line at right guard.

Defense:

Up front he Bulldogs will feed off of senior defensive end Pernell McPhee, who led the team with five sacks in 2009. For this unit to improve off last season sophomore defensive tackles Josh Boyd and Fletcher Cox have to play well against the run. At the other defensive end spot look for junior Sean Ferguson to step in after recording one sack and 4.5 tackles for loss in backup duty last season.

At linebacker the Bulldogs bring back senior middle linebacker Chris White and senior strong-side linebacker KJ Wright, who are the top two leading tacklers back from last season. Look for sophomore Cameron Lawrence to start on the weak side for the departed Jamar Chaney.

Only one change will have to be made in the secondary for the Bulldogs, as senior Maurie Langston looks to step in and start opposite of sophomore Corey Broomfield, who is one of the better young corners in all of the SEC. Also keep an eye out for junior strong safety Charles Mitchell, as he figures to be one of the top safeties in the SEC this season.

Prediction – 5th SEC West: I think the Bulldogs are going to surprise some teams in 2010,  as I look for them to be even more competitive than they were in 2009. The problem is the other teams in this conference are some of the best teams in the entire country, and I just can’t see this team finishing out of the bottom two teams in the West.

Hayward Baker Completes Ambitious Landslide Repair Project on U.S. Highway 61 in Mississippi

Odenton, Md. (Vocus) April 30, 2007

Hayward Baker, Inc., North America’s leading geotechnical contractor, announces the completion of an ambitious landslide repair project for the Mississippi Department of Transportation. The work was conducted along a stretch of U.S. Highway 61, one of the nation’s landmark roads that extends from the Canadian border to the Gulf of Mexico.

The purpose of the work was to stabilize a failing slope that had caused the closure of both southbound lanes of U.S. Highway 61 at Signal Hill on the outskirts of Vicksburg, Mississippi. As general contractor for the project, Hayward Baker installed more than 250 buried anchor blocks to stabilize the slope. The project is noteworthy because of the size of the slide (some 1,300 feet) and the depth of the slide plane below the surface, which necessitated the use of the sophisticated anchoring technology and drilled tiebacks as long as 265 linear feet.

Evidence of landslide activity had been observed at Signal Hill as early as 1977, shortly after completion of the roadway. An earthen berm was constructed initially, which reduced the rate of movement. There was also a trench drain-type system installed in an attempt to remove water that had collected under the roadbed in the fill area.

According to Jeff Curtis of the Mississippi Department of Transportation, over the course of the next 25 years the roadbed would sink as much as four feet on occasion, requiring extensive repairs. But with continuing (and increasing) incremental movements being detected, in 2004 the Mississippi DOT contracted with Burns Cooley Dennis, Inc. (BCD) to investigate, evaluate and recommend a new stabilization system.

A permanent ground anchor/buried anchor block system was recommended by BCD due to it being highly-suited to the site. This recommendation was approved by the Mississippi DOT, and the contract was awarded to Hayward Baker to undertake the project following a bid process.

Hayward Baker served as prime contractor for the 10-month, $ 6 million project.

According to Steve Buckner, special projects manager at Hayward Baker’s Atlanta office which performed the repair work, Hayward Baker was one of several members of the design/engineer team assembled by BCD on the U.S. Highway 61 project. Other participants were ABMB Engineers, Inc., Advanced Engineering Resources, Inc., and the Mississippi Department of Transportation’s own geotechnical branch. “The project was a great success,” Buckner remarked. “The MDOT manager reported that he had never worked with a more professional organization than Hayward Baker.”

Jeff Curtis, the Mississippi DOT’s designated project engineer on this job, expressed strong satisfaction with the work performed by Hayward Baker. “They’re a very professional group – top-notch. They didn’t have any problem finishing the job on time, even when we … had to add another 100 feet of anchors to get to the end of the slide. That included needing to obtain a right of entry from an adjacent landowner. The entire process went as smooth as it could go,” he said.

Because of the Signal Hill project’s noteworthy design, BCD received the 2007 Grand Conceptor Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies – Mississippi (ACEC-MS). The award was given at the annual ACEC-MS Engineering Excellence Awards banquet held on February 21, 2007 in Jackson, Mississippi.

The March 24th edition of QUORUM on MPB focuses on the state’s economic and employment prospects. Thousands of state workers now face furloughs as agency heads look for relief from the budget crunch. Lawmakers have little choice but to cut funding levels across the board, as Mississippi faces some its lowest revenue levels in years. From the Governor’s Mansion to the Capitol rotunda, there’s wide agreement that solid job growth offers the best hope for reinvigorating the state’s economy and refilling state accounts. But is the private sector ready to bring life to that hope, and chip away at our rising unemployment rate? Our panel consists of Gray Swoope, executive director of the Mississippi Development Authority; Mississippi Economic Council president Blake Wilson; and Maury Granger, chairman of the Department of Economics at Jackson State University. We also have excerpts from an interview with Rep. Rufus Straighter (D), House Labor Chairman, who remains at the center of a debate over authorization of Mississippi’s Department of Employment Security.
