Merrimack Receives $ 1.5 Million Tax Incentive Award from Governor Patrick and the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center
Cambridge, Mass. (PRWEB) January 15, 2010
Merrimack Pharmaceuticals is one of 28 life-science companies to receive an award from Governor Patrick and the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center’s Life Sciences Tax Incentive Program. Established in 2008, the program is part of the state’s ten-year, $ 1 billion initiative to create new, long-term jobs in Massachusetts. Eighty companies applied for tax incentives in this first year of the program. Merrimack has committed to create 50 new jobs at the company’s Cambridge facility in 2010.
“We are pleased to be a recipient of the State’s Life Sciences Tax Incentive Program,” said Bob Mulroy, President and Chief Executive Officer of Merrimack Pharmaceuticals. “The incentives will help support our efforts to apply Network Biology to the discovery and development of new and improved medicines for the treatment of cancer. As a Massachusetts company with strong local roots, we are pleased to see the Life Sciences Center support expansion and job creation in an industry critical to our economy and our future health.”
“The Life Sciences Initiative was designed to bring jobs to the Commonwealth and support vital research, and these incentives help us do exactly that,” said Governor Patrick. “By supporting this growth in the life sciences, we are building upon a foundation that will benefit our economy for years to come.”
“In keeping with the initiative’s mandate, we are utilizing these incentives to encourage the creation of jobs in an industry where Massachusetts is a global leader, and where jobs pay more than the average salary in Massachusetts,” said Dr. Susan Windham-Bannister, President & CEO of the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center. “This tax incentive program will stimulate our economy, while holding the companies involved accountable for their job creation commitments.”
About the Life Sciences Tax Incentive Program
The Tax Incentive Program is jointly administered by the Center and the Massachusetts Department of Revenue (DOR), which will oversee the technical administration of the incentives. Jobs that are created must be maintained for at least five years.

Massachusetts Bankruptcy : A Brief and Honest Guide
Massachusetts Bankruptcy : A Brief and Honest Guide
‘Insolvency’, as it has been termed, bankruptcy is a situation where the company or an individual fails to meet the financial requirement. Financial imbalance can happen anytime, as while starting a business, no one thinks that the business might fail, or while fulfilling the ‘big American dream ‘of owning a house, no one thinks that financial instability can strike. The small business which you own in Massachusetts might fail, due to the damage caused by the snowstorm. Your financial instability then can leave you with just only one option of filing bankruptcy in Massachusetts.
There are no thumb rules or definite right or wrong answers as whether or not to file a bankruptcy. However, if you work or live in MA and if any of the following conditions apply for you then consider filing Massachusetts bankruptcy.
If you can only afford to pay the minimum payment on loans and credit cards
If you are constantly receiving notices from creditors about your outstanding payments
If you have lost your job and there is no option of replacing your income
If you face financial loss due to your divorce
If you have an overwhelming medical expense
Massachusetts bankruptcy laws provide rather generous exemptions, compared to other states. The laws offer Massachusetts’ homestead exemption, (an important exemption indeed) based on the amount of equity (which you have in your home), your age and on the time when you filed for exemption status. Understanding the available exemptions is therefore a necessity when navigating the Massachusetts bankruptcy laws and filing Boston Bankruptcy or bankruptcy in MA.
However, it is right after the introduction of the new bankruptcy laws in 2005, Massachusetts bankruptcy filing process has changed drastically and needs the help of an experienced Massachusetts bankruptcy attorney to file for Chapter 7 or Chapter 13 bankruptcy. The Massachusetts bankruptcy law firms mostly handle the cases on a flat fee basis and also provide the low income rate groups and clients a fee waive while filing a bankruptcy. As per bankruptcy laws the debtors are even free to decide on the payment structure from the wide array of the available flexible plans.
Help yourself and hire a professional attorney. A good Massachusetts bankruptcy attorney will let you know the details of the bankruptcy laws and walk you through the process of Massachusetts bankruptcy. There are a number of law sites also, which offers detail information and consultations about how to file bankruptcy in Massachusetts. The Massachusetts bankruptcy lawyers are well aware about the new bankruptcy law and offers specialized advices in selling the real estate property in bankruptcy and also advices about the process of avoiding liens on the property.
Filing bankruptcy is a legal process so once you decide on the bankruptcy filing option, start identifying the particular bankruptcy chapter that you would file for. Provide your complete personal information to the bankruptcy law firms in Massachusetts and also inform your creditors that you are filing for bankruptcy. However, the Massachusetts bankruptcy does not strike down all your debts and you may still have to pay the following debts.
Taxes
Debts accrued as a result of fraudulent activity
Student loans
Purchases of luxury items within 90 days of filing
Alimony & Child Support
Fines owed to federal or Massachusetts government agencies
Recent Cash Advances
Sit with your lawyer and review all your assets and debts before filing for bankruptcy in Massachusetts. It is indeed advisable to sell off the properties on which you can’t claim an exemption to pay off the debt. Consider claiming all property that you are eligible to keep as exempt for availing the exemption.
Let’s face this; bankruptcy often becomes the only thing to save your home and to help you in regaining your financial status. And Massachusetts bankruptcy can help you to erase or at least supports you in reducing the debts and thus can leave a dramatic effect on your financial circumstance. The Massachusetts bankruptcy center helps you in getting rid of your debt. Boasting a team of expert attorneys and support staffs and with an array of locations, dotted all across the Bay State, the Massachusetts bankruptcy provides you customized solutions in regaining your financial stability. Massachusetts Health Insurance for Small Businesses
Massachusetts Health Insurance for Small Businesses
Massachusetts health insurance for small businesses is perceived with a lot of skepticism with regular newspaper reports of health insurance companies refusing to pay claims over certain kinds of illnesses or even doctors not being reimbursed for their services. You should remember that the insurance companies in Massachusetts are profit oriented, and if a Massachusetts health insurance company is not paying a claim, it has certain legal reasons to do so. What happens in the process is that the individual suffers. Try looking for the loopholes of the policy which is something not everyone does. The purpose of looking into these shortfalls is to get benefited out of them.
Massachusetts health insurance companies go great lengths for detailing their coverage limitations by giving down the details. In this case, it is best not to wait for the letter of denial for going through the specifications that the policy entails. As you rely greatly on the agent and his ability to elucidate the coverage terms and conditions, you get to know about the amounts that you are to pay in terms of deductibles and premiums. Purchasing health insurance may seem like an uphill task for a lot of us as, by their nature, plans are generally ambiguous. In such a situation, it often becomes difficult for people to determine the nature of the policy – whether it is short term or long term, standard or optional.
Look for Affordable Health Insurance in Massachusetts
As far as small business owners are concerned, it is not that easy to locate a good medical insurance plan that covers their sundry needs. As far as affordable group medical insurance is concerned, you should note that these are available at fairly reasonable rates or they may even be considerably expensive in nature. The amount of money that you are required to spend on affordable group insurance in Massachusetts is something that depends on the number of employees you have or their health and age. In fact, this kind of a policy is hugely beneficial for the employee.
A lot of employees believe that this is a valuable perk even though the salaries are slightly reduced, and the job satisfaction is a little less. To them, this is a better alternative than looking for a well paying job without health benefits. The basic element in looking for reliable health insurance provider in Massachusetts is to select the ideal insurance provider which offers them better quotes.
Personal Medical Insurance Programs
If there are no employees in your small business, you don’t need to apply for the coverage through the business. You will need to obtain the quotes, and if you cannot afford the prices of group health insurance, you are free to help out employees for getting the quotes for their personal health insurance. Businesses do not pay their employees’ premiums and if they pay them, the insurers will have them pay the premiums on group health insurance. The costs of the health insurance Massachusetts policy will be accordingly adjusted.

Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick’s visit to NaviNet Headquarters
Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick’s visit to NaviNet Headquarters
On Tuesday we were very fortunate to have a special guest at NaviNet headquarters. Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick visited NaviNet headquarters in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Following a tour and meeting with NaviNet executives, Governor Patrick and NaviNet representatives discussed growth in the health information technology (HIT) industry and its positive impact on the state’s economy. NaviNet executives also discussed the role Massachusetts HIT companies, including NaviNet, have had in national healthcare initiatives.
Governor Patrick told us that “Just last month Massachusetts added over 19,000 private sector jobs, the largest monthly gain in 20 years and the sixth straight month of strong job gains – in large part because of companies like NaviNet that continue to innovate, grow and expand. With the help of businesses like NaviNet and countless others across the Commonwealth, we will continue to emerge from this global recession stronger and faster than the rest of the nation and build a stronger and brighter Commonwealth for a generation to come.”
Governor Patrick’s understanding of the key issues and challenges that our industry faces was very evident, as was his big-picture insight into how healthcare IT vendors can improve our nation’s healthcare system overall.
We also posted these photos on Facebook and Twitter, so be sure to stay connected by ‘liking’ and ‘following’ us respectively.
Regards,
Brad Waugh

State House Rally for Casinos in MA
On Wednesday, March 31st, 2010, over one thousand members of the labor trades, including union carpenters, electricians, ironworkers, plumbers, and painters, attended a rally outside the State House to garner support for a bill to be passed to allow gambling in the state of Massachusetts, making possible the construction of at least 3 destination-style resort casinos. These projects could lead to 20000 jobs for Massachusetts residents. Members then went inside and found their State Representatives in order to voice their concerns about unemployment and urge them to support the bill. Contact your local state rep and senator and let them know that you support casinos in Massachusetts because you support job growth for Massachusetts residents.
