Denver Icon Finds New Chance to Shine
Denver Icon Finds New Chance to Shine
Atlanta, GA (Vocus) October 13, 2010
The Elitch Gardens Theme Park Observation Tower in Denver has long been a city icon. During daylight hours, visitors to The Mile High City can see the Observation Tower from miles away. With help from metro-Atlanta’s EDG (Entertainment Design Group), the Observation Tower now colorfully illuminates the nighttime skyline as well.
Last week EDG completed installment of LED lighting within the 300-foot-tall tower. Each of the six, 100-pound LED light fixtures provides after-dark lighting as well as changing color effects. The new lighting, installed by lighting designer, Steven C. Guy, was in place in time to light the Tower in pink in support of the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. In addition, the LED fixtures will save PARC Management, LLC (the theme park’s owner and operator) an estimated 66 percent in electricity usage fees over traditional incandescent lighting.
“Elitch Gardens is very appreciative of EDG for the outstanding job it did with the installation of the LED lights on the Observation Tower,” said Elitch Gardens General Manager, Steve Honeycutt. “The tower reaches over 300 feet, so I was skeptical when I was told that the lights would illuminate the entire height of the tower. I was wrong—the Observation Tower is now an impressive sight at night that can be seen from any point within the park as well as throughout downtown Denver. Because of the lights, the tower is now an icon for the park as well as the city. I was impressed by the professionalism and dedication of EDG, and I thank them for enhancing our park so much.”
The project is a first between EDG and PARC Management. EDG provides creative, experiential integrated solutions that enable its clients to create meaningful and lasting connections with their customers. The company has a 20-year history of working with theme parks around the world.
PARC Management, LLC is a leading provider of family entertainment with 25 theme parks, water parks and entertainment venues across the United State and Canada. Its mission is to create treasured memories for families in a safe, clean and fun environment.

Local Florist Expands Operations By Opening New Retail Stores In Indiana
Oberer’s first Indiana location is under construction 12671 Old Meridian St in Carmel, IN The Store will open October 1
Dayton, OH (PRWEB) August 29, 2010
Oberer’s Flowers, Ohio’s largest florist announced today that it is expanding into neighboring Indiana and will open 4 retail stores in the Indianapolis metropolitan area. The companies first out of state retail store is located in Carmel, Indiana. Construction has begun and the 3,000 square ft store will open on October 1st.
“We’re very excited to bring our florist to Indiana,” says Rob Spikol, COO for Oberer’s Flowers. Located just north of Indianapolis in Hamilton County, Carmel is one of Indiana’s fastest growing cities. A dynamic city with award-winning schools, a thriving business environment and is very family-oriented “It’s a perfect match for our business.” Spikol says the company will give away 3,000 high value flower arrangements on its opening day to local residents.
The Carmel location is the first of four planned in the Indianapolis area, with additional stores in Indianapolis City, Fishers and in the southern metro area. “Our expansion is great news not only for the jobs we’re creating in Indiana, but the jobs we’re creating right here in Ohio,” Spikol said.
“It all began in Dayton, and we are very proud of our roots,” says Randy Oberer, president of Oberer’s Flowers. In recent years the company has expanded into Cincinnati, West Chester, Grove City and Columbus, Ohio. “We’ve managed to grow well above the industry standards because we operate much differently than a typical flower shop.” He says “We’ve always been focused on providing the best value for our customers money.” “People really notice that when times are tough.”
The company grows some flowers from their greenhouses located on Troy Street much the same way Oberer’s Great Uncle Carl did back in 1922. But over the years the volume ballooned to far greater than capacity. Today Oberer’s purchases flowers from local domestic farms as well as international flower markets. Refrigerated tractor trailers can be seen unloading goods 4 days a week, and the company receives two trailers of plants from Florida each week.
“Thriving in a recession is no more a challenge than staying in business for 100 years,” says Oberer. “The way we’ve done it, is the way our company was started.” He continues; “Taking care of each customer, like they’re our most important, because they are.”
Oberer’s Flowers Inc. is the 5th largest independent florist in the United States. The company has been providing customers with fresh flowers and the finest selection of plants, fruit and gourmet foods, perfect for every occasion for nearly 100 years. Historic information can be found at www.oberers.com/history.html
Oberer’s Flowers has two subsidiary companies and five operating divisions including a Central Production Facility, Retail Stores, Greenhouse & Growing Operation, Wholesale Floral and two Import Divisions (one for fresh international product and another for international hard goods). Oberer’s Flowers has grown from a single horse and wagon to a fleet of over 70 delivery vehicles.
Oberer’s Flowers corporate headquarters; a 100,000 sq. ft facility located on a six acre complex right where it all began on Troy Street in Dayton, Ohio. The company has multiple retail stores and delivery operations spanning three states in the MidWest serving customers in Cincinnati, Columbus and Dayton in Ohio; Indianapolis, Indiana and Northern Kentucky.
Oberer’s also operates support facilities in Miami, Florida; Quito, Ecuador and has an office in Shen Yang, China located in the Heping District.
Each day Oberer’s handles more than 500 orders direct from customers for delivery within the companies delivery area. The company has grown to become one of the nations largest Wedding and Event decorators handling more than 1,000 wedding per year ranging from 0 to ,000. Orders are generated in their retail stores, by telephone or online at www.oberers.com.

Flowers, grave care and Indiana: A new kind of entrepreneurship?
Flowers, grave care and Indiana: A new kind of entrepreneurship?
There is a new type of entrepreneurship that is sweeping the United States in the wake of terrible economies. Recently, an Indianapolis, Indiana couple started a new business venture, Tombstones and Daisies. They offer grave tending services such as flower placement, headstone clean up and grave site maintenance. The target market for this grave site maintenance service is people who have friends or loved ones buried far away. Many people have moved to different areas of the country, but still want someone near Indianapolis to help them with remembrances.
This type of out of the box thinking is an example of American ingenuity in the face of tough economic times. Who would have thought there would be a market for this kind of service? Obviously, this couple did. They are indicative of a wave of people that have been hit hard by tough economic times. These folks have two choices. They can refuse to become victims and try to create their own security, or they can give up and try to let an already bankrupt federal government entitlement system try to take care of them.
With high unemployment in most parts of the US, many people are turning to the creation of their own jobs. Unemployment benefits are not enough to keep the credit wolves away from the door, and they expire after a limited time. It’s estimated that 35% of those out of work don’t show up in unemployment statistics. They’ve either dropped off the benefit rolls or were independent contractors to begin with.
Many of these unemployed have skills that make them perfect candidates for entrepreneurship. In the case of the Indiana couple, he was in the radio sales management and marketing business for over 30 years. His ability to promote a new service business is invaluable. She has a Masters Degree and was the chief financial officer of a small business corporation. As a team, they are building a business that they hope will offer replacement of some of their security in turbulent times.
Time will tell if the central Indiana couple are right about the market for a grave tending business. Who knows whether a business of grave site maintenance and flower placement on tombstones will be the next sustainable, “green business” opportunity. I wouldn’t bet against them. They represent the type of small business that is the backbone of the United States.
One thing is certain about the creation of a small businesses. People around the United States are resilient. Many are not afraid to try new things, in order to make a living and enjoy their work. Hard economic times have always seemed to bring out the best qualities in people. When the US comes out of it’s recession, part of the credit will go to those individuals who refused to become victims, when faced with hardship. They will be part of the wave of new businesses that keep people off welfare rolls and earning their own way.
I’m Ben Stevens and I write about people and their struggle to stay afloat in tough economic times. If you’d like to follow the progress of this Indiana couple, check out their grave tending business at http://www.TombstonesandDaisies.com. When you feel like the world is closing in on you, visit my blog at http://resiliantamerica.blogspot.com/
I have seen many struggles in my 40+ years of small business ownership. I have been a casualty a few times myself. I salute those with the resilience that it takes to pick yourself up, set your course and forge ahead in your small but mighty business.

2010 Indiana Football Predictions
2010 Indiana Football Predictions
The Indiana Hoosiers will look to bounce back from a poor showing in 2009 where they went just 4-8 overall and 1-7 in Big Ten play. The Hoosiers now suffered back to back losing seasons after going 7-6 and reaching their first bowl game since 1993. Head coach Bill Lynch has just 13 starters back from last year, so it appears they could push that streak to three this season. Here is a quick breakdown of what the Hoosiers will send to the field this season, plus my thoughts on where they finish the year in the Big Ten.
Offense:
One plus for the Hoosiers is they have nine starters back on the offensive side of the ball, and will not have to make any changes at the quarterback position, as senior Ben Chappell returns after throwing for 2,941 yards with 17 touchdowns in 2009. Chappell did throw 15 interceptions last season, and could lose his job if he doesn’t lower that number this season, as the Hoosiers are pretty deep at the quarterback position.
The Hoosiers have all their weapons back in the passing game, as they return all three starters at wide receiver and junior tight end Max Demond. Juniors Tandon Doss and Damarlo Belcher are the two biggest weapons the Hoosiers have at wide receiver, and both figure to be two of the top wide outs in the Big Ten this season.
In 2009 the Hoosiers turned over the starting running back job to freshman Darius Willis, and he finished up the year with 607 yards and six scores. The Big Ten has a lot of strong defenses so it won’t be easy for Willis to improve his numbers a ton this season, but I think he has a good shot at finishing a lot closer to the 1,000 yard mark.
A big reason I believe Willis is primed for a better season, is the fact that Indiana has four starters back on the offensive line. This isn’t the most talented group, but the four back should really benefit from the experience they gained in 2009. The only change needed is at right guard where senior Cody Faulkner is expected to make his way into the starting lineup.
Defense:
The Hoosiers had nine starters back on the defensive side of the ball in 2009, and they wound up allowing nearly six points less a game. This year they have only four starters back, and the struggles figure to return on this side of the ball.
Up front the Hoosiers bring back sophomore starting defensive tackles Adam Replogle and Larry Black, and these two will have to really improve for the rest of this unit to hold ground. Senior Deonte Mack and junior Darius Johnson are expected to take over at the two defensive end spots, but neither has really done much in the time they have been given.
Senior Tyler Replogle is the only starter back at linebacker, as he returns at the strong-side linebacker spot. Replogle finished second on the team with 80 tackles last year, and is the Hoosiers top tackler back from last season. Junior Jeff Thomas is projected to take over at middle linebacker, while sophomore Chad Sherer is slated to take over as the other starting outside linebacker. This unit doesn’t figure to be very good this season.
Only one starter returns in the secondary for the Hoosiers, as they welcome back senior corner Adrian Burks. Junior Lenyatta Kiles is projected to take over at the other starting corner slot, while senior Mitchell Evans and junior Chris Adkins are expected to take over at the two safety positions.
Big Ten Prediction – 10th: Hard to be very optimistic about the Hoosiers in 2010 with the defense they are projected to send onto the field. The defense will completely cancel out any points the offense can score, and you just can’t win a lot of games doing that unless your offense is scoring closer to 40 points a game.
See where Jimmy Boyd has the Hoosiers finishing this year, in his 2010 Big Ten Predictions.
